Background Questions

Searching Background Questions - generally ask who, what, when, why, where or how about a single disease, drug, intervention or concept.

Foreground Questions

As you gain experience in searching background questions and using clinical tools to find quick answers, you'll begin asking more complex clinical questions or foreground questions. Format these questions using "PICO."

  • P - patient, problem, population
  • I - intervention (nursing intervention, tx, drug)
  • C - comparison of interventions (gold standard or benchmark)
  • O - outcomes (for the patient, society, economics)
